According to Merriam-Webster; “push the envelope” means “to go beyond the usual or normal limits by doing something new, risky, etc.” The idiom originates from aviation, where it referred to the flight limitations. The “envelope” that pilots would test to see how far they could safely go. The phrase became more widely known in the mainstream through Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book, The Right Stuff, which discussed test pilots pushing these boundaries.
