Julia 17 (2017)
★★★★★

Andreea Boyer gives an emotional performance in her feature-length directorial debut
Andreea Boyer, who wrote, directed, and stars in this powerful drama, gives a superb performance in the title role. Julia is a teenage girl who has suffered through years of her father’s abuse while growing up in New York and is struggling to overcome the emotional scars it’s caused. Among the strong supporting cast are Wolfgang Flatz as Julia’s abusive father, German actress Berivan Kaya as the mother who walked out on Julia as a child, and acclaimed director Ulli Lommel (The Boogie Man, Black Dahlia, Borderline Cult) in his final film appearance as the mysterious director Julia meets in Hollywood and then later accompanies to Brazil. The scene where Julia finds her mother after 12 years apart and confronts her, is particularly noteworthy. This film is also accompanied throughout by a good soundtrack.
